DYNAMICS - Alex Collins

Meet Alex Collins, the Dynamics Team Lead and an Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mathematics student.

Roles and Responsibilities at HPR:

As the Dynamics sub-team lead I’m responsible for planning and managing the ongoing development of our custom trajectory simulator SATURN and helping to plan how can constantly improve our approach to CFD.

Projects and Tasks worked on:

At the moment, I’m working on Monte Carlo simulations for Saturn which involve us randomly perturbing parameters, such as the rocket mass, wind speed or drag coefficient. We do this for as many variables as we can, and repeat the simulation hundreds or thousands of times, giving us a better idea of how the system behaves in a range of circumstances.

Favourite Monash HPR moment:

My favourite Monash HPR moment is our success at AURC in 2019. After months of hard work with the team it was amazing to see our trajectory simulator predict Hyperion’s apogee to within 15 feet, an error of 0.1%. It was a real testament to all the hard work we’d done over the months.
